PRINCOF Extends Teaching Hours at CoE to Cover Lost Hours During Strike
It can be recalled that CETAG on the 1st of August 2023 has declared a nationwide strike action due to the inability of the government to honour the NLC’s Arbitral Award Orders and the negotiated conditions of service since May 2, 2023.
The strike action was successfully called off and lecturers have returned to lecture halls.
During the strike action, the current Level 100 students have lost a lot as they were not taught for a month.
In order to regain what they have lost, PRINCOF has decided to increase the engagement hours of lecturers with students to cover the lost credit hours.
To make things clear, this changes would affect only level 100 students, they were directly and badly affected.
PRINCOF Extends Teaching Hours at CoE to Cover Lost Hours During Strike
PRINCOF has taken a swift decision to engage the academic staff across the 46 Colleges of Education to revise the teaching calendar to extend the teaching hours from 6.00am to 8.00pm to cover the 15 hours lost within the strike period.
Level 100 studentss received only 3 weeks of instruction out of the 13 weeks before the strike action. The Level 300 students completed their semester successfully in August and the Level 200 students resumed and the strike was suspended after a week.
PRINCOF has initiated this initiative in order to avoid the extension of the academic calendar to 2024.
PRINCOF has taken this decision to prevent any further distortion of the already stretched academic calendar of the colleges, and to also prevent the recurrence of the all-year-round-teaching in subsequent years.
However, PRINCOF wishes to take this opportunity to make a passionate appeal and plead with the Minister of Education to reconsider the issue of the non-payment of the salaries of the Tutors for the month of August 2023, as they are remorseful and have learnt their lessons.
Below is the official release from PRINCOF.
